چکیده

A finite element method is presented for predicting the mechanical performance of discontinuous fiber mesostructures typically produced by directed carbon fiber preforming. High-filament count bundles are modeled using beam elements to enable large representative volume elements to be studied. The beams are attached to a regular grid of 2D continuum elements, which represent the matrix material, using an embedded element technique. The model is validated by comparing simulations with experimental data for random and aligned fiber architectures produced with different tow sizes (6 and 24K) and fiber lengths (28, 58, and 115mm). Stiffness and strength predictions are generally within 10% for 6K preforms, but this error increases up to 40% with increasing tow size because of the assumption that the fiber bundles are circular in cross-section.

A Procedure for Preparation of Semi-activated Carbon Fiber without any Treatment under High Temperature

A procedure for preparation of semi-activated carbon fiber (SACF) without any treatment under high temperature was proposed. The first step of the procedure is coating of an inorganic fiber (E-glass fiber) by an adsorbent mixture including powder activated carbon, methyl cellulose and water. In this work a set of experiments was performed to attain appropriate adsorbent mixture for good quality...

Structure-property Relationships of Composite Coil Springs Processed by Rtm

Textile technology and resin transfer molding (RTM) process have been combined to manufacture composites coil springs. Preforms for coil springs were made by braiding process, in which axial yarns are located in the central region and braiding yarns covered them circumferentially. The geometric and process parameters that are related with the fiber orientation and fiber volume fraction of the b...

A novel approach to fabricate high volume fraction nanocomposites with long aligned carbon nanotubes

Conventional micro-fiber-reinforced composites provide insight into critical structural features needed for obtaining maximum composite strength and stiffness: the reinforcements should be long, well aligned in a unidirectional orientation, and should have a high reinforcement volume fraction. It has long been a challenge for researchers to process CNT composites with such structural features. ...

PREDICTING THE STIFFNESS OF BIAXIAL BRAIDED FIBER COMPOSITES BY INCORPORATION OF CARBON NANO FIBER

In this study, carbon nano fibers (CNFs) were mixed into epoxy resin through a magnetic stirrer and again mixed using ultra sonicator. Using hand layup technique, biaxial braided fiber composites were prepared with unfilled, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 wt% CNF. Tensile test and shear test was performed to identify the tensile strength and shear strength of the composites. Fractured surface of the tensile sp...

Mechanical material characterization of an embedded Carbon nanotube in polymer matrix by employing an equivalent fiber

Effective elastic properties for carbon nanotube reinforced composites are obtained through a variety of micromechanics techniques. An embedded carbon nanotube  in  a  polymer  matrix  and  its surrounding  interphase  is  replaced with an equivalent fiber for  predicting  the  mechanical  properties of  the  carbon  nanotube/polymer composite. The effects of an interphase layer between the nan...
